- As for the blog's name: -

I was @ Gustav Ericsson's sight, - Anzenkai, and I was looking at Nishijima Roshi’s calligraphies over there. Particularly there is one - "seki shin hen pen" - about which Gustav has earlier said in a blog post that it is Nishijima's favorite phrase from Master Dogen.

This seemed strange to me. It was not what I would expect Nishijima Roshi's favorite phrase to be. It seemed it could be some Rinzai master's favorite quote, - it seems to express continuous and constant sincerity, - but it did not seem to fit my view of the way Nishijima Roshi saw things.

So - consequently - I tried to think what would I expect his favorite quote to be. But all phrases I could think of did not seem to fit just what I might have had in mind.

So I tried to come up with what I would see it as, - and what I have come up with - is - "this universe out here".

- And this seems to be the right name for this blog here too.

- Definitely.                                                 ________________________

The Worst

Perhaps it would have been natural that I would have written this in a “Thoughts” post. - (See here too) But I don’t write these anymore.

- Regarding Donald Trump’s presidency, - today, on 15.1 2021, - the time I am writing this, - it seems the worst thing about the whole deal, or the whole issue, - is that even now people, - I mean many, - of course not all, - do not understand how bad the whole thing is.

- I mean I could not imagine him winning the elections next time, in 2024, - or even being a serious candidate then. - But the thing is, the issue, - that so many may still support him. I mean how blind can people be? This seems to be the phenomenon which may signify the worst toward the future.

- More than all that happened, I think. - If the minds of a significant percentage in America (I mean in the US) can be so disappointing, - so poor, so miserable, - the hope may be scant and the danger evident. No one has foreseen initially Trump would become president, or could become resident, - or even be a serious runner. It all seemed like just a joke at first. But Trump proved the system sucks. - Than again, - On January 6th, - no one, basically, - figured out what could happen, - or what was going to happen. - Else than some things the FBI figured out, - but this was based on concrete communication among extremists who were communicating among themselves. - No one could tell off the surface. Including Nancy Peloci who seemed to later assume (among others) Trump was seeing things in advance. - So this should be applied ahead. Surprises are to be expected. Actual surprises. Not today. Not tomorrow. But with time in an unclear timing. - You can tell people anything. Some will believe some strangest things. - And it’s not about loving the alien. - It’s a bit like a monster slowly awakening in a horror film. - And things could get worse. If people now believe x, next they might believe y. It’s no unified belief, - of course. There would be different levels and different views. - Some worse than others. But this should be followed. Should be noticed. Should be monitored. Education is not easy since people might pick up whatever they like on the web. But the United States of America should be aware that a monster may be growing within its guts and care of it may not be easy anyway, - particularly if time is wasted and awareness is insufficient.

Thoughts II

10.11.2020 – The computer seems to have become man’s best friend.

11.11.2020 – One of the troubles of humanity in general and of materialistic individuals in particular is that when coming across severe mistakes of humanity in the past where existing norms [of the relevant past time] are such that would be understood today as ridiculous or almost unbelievably unreasonable – those individuals would imagine themselves altogether different than their old predecessors and fundamentally think they have come beyond such miserable attitudes rooted in baseless confidence devoid of wisdom – which they are fundamentally unable to recognize.

     –     (That is to say – if you take for example what the inquisition did – burning people alive and using severe torture as part of their interrogations, certain of their righteousness in quite an unbelievable way, - or interpretations of various religious stories in different parts of the world accepting them as valid facts where they might not necessarily be very distant from legends, - (while I am not saying other religious narratives may not be true reports, but one should be able to tell the difference) contemporary views and attitudes may be no less stupid)

12.11.2020 – One of the most important things for people to understand is that contemporary science is selling them shit.

(This may be much like the story the Buddha told about the blind men touching the elephant)

About 15-20 ago I became unable to sit Zazen due to a bodily weakness. It seems there is nothing like it, - no substitute, - nothing similar for one who knows it. – Humans, - apparently, - in a way at least, - are very weak on the side of the will. They do everything through thought, - everyone are accustomed to that, - so practically no one sees it – generally, - as strange. – But as it seems fundamentally we might expect the situation would be quite different, - that abilities would not be so dependent upon thought. It might be quite more natural for the will to be able to directly act upon things, - but we have almost no such ability. Rather we always have to think how to use existing circumstances for which ever purpose we might need or want to achieve. It seems to be the consequence of some sort of deep sinking into the physical plain, - a degenerated situation where our being is severely incoherent and imperfect off being as-if soaked into where we live at present.

The very idea that mental illness could be treated by mere chemicals is amazing.

14.11.2020 – It seems to me one is unable to understand spirituality without understanding Jesus’ words referring to religious leaders of his time as “blind managers” or generally understanding what was he talking about using these words. (– Off my memory: – “Let them be”, orleave them alone”, - “blind managers they are, - will the blind lead the blind? – And they both fell into the pit.”)

An old thought I had is that what characterizes the spirit is that business men (and women) are unable to take it over and use it for their own purposes. (As they do with practically almost anything else, - i.e.)

16.11.2020 – The view of materialistics of religion may be quite correct, - religion has become degenerated, - this may even be close to an understatement. – Most (in western religion) may believe “God” exists simply because they have been told so, while the spirit of things may be to a great extent suitable or appropriate for a considerably earlier period when old scriptures have appeared.

24-26.11.2020 – In the moment of the present there isn’t room even for the slightest thought. Usually (as it seems to me) people think – not necessarily consciously – of the moment of the present as something lasting something like two or three seconds. That is enough to raise at least a simple thought. It is not. Of course. – It has no length. – There is no time in it to think of anything. Do notice. – You can not think anything in there. It doesn’t seem anything one could imagine. It is different from what one might in most cases think or imagine when it comes to mind. (I actually thought of that quite earlier, [than the date here] but it came to my mind again and seemed to fit here)

28.11.2020 – We imagine ourselves to be moving in time all the time. But actually, - as said before in various places I guess, - in the present moment, - we only remember the past and estimate the future. – We do not and can not [directly] see the past or future in the present moment or from the present moment. But this means we practically don’t know whether we are [actually] moving in time. – It may be that we are forever stuck in one “present moment” with the constant-illusion-of-this-notion-of-being-in-motion-through-“time” we are never – of course, - able to examine.

The situation of religions today (not where there is a transmission independent of conceptual understanding) may much resemble the children’s game known as “broken phone” (“telefon shavur” in Hebrew) in Israel. (– Simply “telephone” in the US, “Chinese whispers” in the UK)

30.11.2020 – It is quite obvious that a society which neglects education would pay the price, - but the practical situation may be that subsequently in the coming situation the norms would change in a way so that the fact of the damage done would not be detected by a considerable portion of the people there. This too is no secret but it makes the occurrence irreversible to an extent which is not negligible in itself. I mean it creates blindness the cure of is prevented by a taboo.

Since the “I” by its very nature requires certain time for its construction, - that is is not ultimately direct, - the present moment is inaccessible to it.

1.12.2020 – The place where religions degenerate is where people are unable to understand that occasionally things said are meant or intended to express what can not necessarily be expressed. (Among other things, - sometimes things are expressed in a manner intended to suit a certain stage of development of humanity and later when we have become more mature or more awake the old manner of expression is clung to ignoring the fact)

     –     As it seems to me, - the second story of creation in the Bible (Genesis 2:4-25 (plus the whole next chapter)) was never originally meant to be expressing an actual occurrence as described in it by whoever has presented it at first, - but the fact has been forgotten and lost.

7.12.2020 – According to common materialistic views the existence of mind is unexplainable. – Whatever technical explanations one may present or think of they would never create a ground for reasoning the existence of mind. – Common materialistics take it for granted that matter (physical matter, practically) existed first and later, - subsequently, - mind appeared. Following such a view the situation is as said above. – Actually, - mind is prior to matter. Though in the physical world apparently matter appeared first. This is misleading and the cause of the mistake.
Joint by the confidence and the stupidity of the materialistics. – I have related to this in a post I had on about three years ago. – You might check things there if you are interested. Practically the situation may be said that mind was there first (– if you would say the reality is mind, some might say it is and some might say it is not, and both are correct) and matter have appeared only subsequently, - if you would see it as existing at all, - that is.

14.12.2020 – Among those sitting in the court of law there seem to be quite a few whose god is the procedure.

An excessive attempt to avoid mistakes could result in severely poor outcomes.

22.12.2020 – Democracy is fundamentally a rough arithmetic mechanism. – Emotional people imagining themselves wise attribute all sorts of other things to it. All sorts of balances and safety measures may be important or valuable in themselves, - but it does take an idiot to be blind to the simple fact they are not part of what this system is. – Those emotional guys mentioned apparently see it as a must it has to be some lofty and elevated ideal, - their attitude is quite – or somewhat, - religious like. – Practically it is just a rough mechanism suitable for the-current-time-we-are-living-in which in no way could even come close to manifesting the highest possible virtues of man.

23.12.2020 – The practical fact any number close to 50% of the American people voted for Donald Trump means there is a sickness there. – The ridiculous situation is just because the sickness is so deep you can not speak of it. If it was just 5% or 10% it might have been quite fine, - you could call things what they are, - but through the great number the phenomenon gains legitimacy and it’s not OK if you speak the truth of it. – There is a similar situation in France with Marine Le Pen gaining legitimacy though not winning elections, - but coming close is enough, quite reasonably. Even if it would be only 25% voting for Trump it would be rather the same, - as for the sickness I mean. – People should be aware that what they categorize as politically correct or not politically correct or as acceptable or appropriate could lead them eventually to where they wouldn’t want to get to, - because of their stupidity. They ought to awaken now and fight those who will claim such ideas should not be expressed.

Had democracy prevailed in the Sinai desert in Biblical times it seems the people of Israel would have returned to Egypt rather than continued on their journey and arrive at the Promised Land.

24.12.2020 – Regarding the path, - people usually would seek success. – It’s quite natural, - obviously. – And they may judge it by the measure by which they get it. Quite foolishly, - actually, in practice, many times. – It would make more sense to first come to know what aims should we seek, - which would be a right purpose, - meaningful. – The actual situation may be much different than the common views. – This is the place to start, fundamentally.

     –     – It is not that we should divide it all it this manner, - but this is the right way. One does not need more than common sense in order to tell. – First you [come to] figure out what is important, - what is right to do, what is right to seek, - than you can [perhaps] measure or estimate things accordingly, - not the other way around. It’s quite simple, - it makes sense, it doesn’t require spiritual understanding, - but obviously this isn’t the way most people go. Though it could be otherwise.

I believe democracy has gone bankrupt on November 8th 2016, - but fervent adherents will not see. – Partly because their attitude is emotional.

25.12.2020 – Not so long ago, - 200 years ago, - was someone to claim that diseases we have and suffer from are caused by very small being we are unable to see (germs, bacteria) the reaction among most learned men and women would have been similar to the reaction today amongst such individuals to serious references to the occult.

1.1.2021 – Wisdom is much abandoned these days because of seeking objectivity. – What one who has attained it is able to know or understand not necessarily others will be able to verify independently. – When it comes to “science”, - physics for example, - ideas are basically able to be examined in order to verify their reasonability. Same in [some] other fields. – But these merely depend on the intellect. – Wisdom is different. – You can’t test it through IQ exams. You are not necessarily able to convince those devoid of it of its validity. Today many might imagine this would be a reason to put it aside, - since they doubt its outcomes and practically perhaps its existence too. (Many intellectuals may be unable to understand what the difference between intelligence and wisdom is) So in practice it’s neglected and does not contribute to humanity and its progress. – Which means some further materialism as a result. Somewhat of a vicious circle that is, - too.

There is a practical influence which means modern technology is causing people to be less mature.

2.1.2021 – I have long thought that the worst issue with humanity was that people think society is capable of conducting itself.

On 12.11.2020 it seems there were some thoughts I intended to write but are not there.
It seems the first is missing. – Also where said “it seems there is nothing like it” it refers, - of course, - to Zazen.
Having checked later, - the quote on Nov. 14 (2020) is from Matthew 15:14. (– The expression itself mentioned there appears in various places elsewhere too)
On some places the texts have been changed later than the date they were at first written. – On 7.12.2020 I could not complete writing because I had no Internet connection and so could not see my earlier post linked there. – In some other places I also made changes but not altering the original idea. – Sometimes very slight, - correcting grammar mistakes or changing capital letters to small ones or vice versa. – Sometimes things look better here on the blog differently than on the “Word” file.
This remark may be in general quite unnecessary but anyone interested could check the file here, though some changes have been made there too.
(– If necessary to mention: – On December 23rd 2020 “such ideas” means ideas saying you can’t call people like Donald Trump or Marine Le Pen and their supporters what they truly are.)
Obviously after the January 6th occurrences some things may look different. The thoughts relevant to this (perhaps) from 30.11.2020, (– first) 23.12.2020 (– first) and 24.12.2020 (– second) still seem as true as they were and anyway had no real changes. (I changed “PC” to “politically correct” and added an “a” somewhere where it was missing)
There is also a post I wrote (after the incidence)  which should be on on May 31st unless anything goes wrong.
I completed this post (including these remarks here) on Jan 17. (2021)

Thoughts

31.1.2019 – In Judaism the issue of rejecting Christ is like the story of the gold calf about a 1,000 years earlier.

There is lots of bullshit in Buddhism: Some say that it is a non spiritual religion, some say that Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva is a female, and some advocate Buddhism for homosexuals, lesbians and their LHTB community. (Just to make clear, - I don’t mean there is a fault with any of them individually choosing Buddhism, - but creating a form of Buddhism (or any other religion) which is supposed to adopt itself to their wrongness of tendencies, seems very clearly to tell of the absence of ability or knowledge as for the one (or many) creating it)

If the Pope thinks the message of Christ ought to be no longer brought to the Jewish people or that unlike what the Gospels tell the Jews have no responsibility for his crucifixion and death than he might better be looking for a different occupation.

3.2.2019 – Jesus referred to the leaders of Judaism at his time as “blind managers”. Nothing has changed since, - no apparent wisdom or understanding has been acquired by their subsequent continuers of lead of this religion, - rather those so referred to are considered a corner stone never to be doubted, - but still in Christianity the attitude would be today as if the contemporary leaders of Judaism are reasonable people who could be related to as appropriate spiritual guides to their audience of believers. This may be in accord with another thing Jesus said: “– ... – then I was to say to them I never knew you, - away from me, - you labourers of wrong”. ((Matthew 7:23) See also Luke 13:22-30)

11.5.2019 – The secular has lots of ridiculous standards. Many, particularly women, some of those known as “feminists”, - deny the differences between men and women. As for an undeniable standard rooted in the field of reality independent of contemporary-materialistic-norms it could be said that the number of women attaining to the enlightenment viewed as the end of the spiritual path is never close to the number of men arriving at the same destination. – I do not refer to what it might imply or mean but the rate may be 10:1 or not even that. Those who know the meaning and value of the phenomenon mentioned will inevitably understand the depth of the significance here.

19.5.2019 – It seems throughout the life of Jesus no one of those taught by him was concerned with the question of what is his father in Heaven.

21.5.2019 – I don’t know if this is common elsewhere or widely around the world but in Israel it is commonly said that man is “the crown of creation”. Judging by the deep ignorance in which humans live – particularly in this era, - and by the miserable abilities of what is referred to as “karmic consciousness” or “thinking of the flesh”, (as the expression Kalo uses) and also taking into consideration the way the-manner-of-life on this planet would seem to more reasonable beings in other worlds, - (which are also of course part of creation) this saying does practically seem ridiculous in a way worth mentioning here.

(Added to the last) The great majority of humanity are like blind moles making their way digging here and there following rigid manners of thought completely unaware to what real life and reasonable consideration may be.

23.5.2019 – Education is a thing which seems to have become practically lost these days with the integral neglection of the spirit (and religion) following the materialistic views so common everywhere. – Even the hope for planting real simple values is many times lost in advance. Though materialistic sciences are altogether blind to the fact the spirit corresponds to the core of the human-mind, - when lost, when no longer sought after, when its value is blinded to, - materialistic intellectual replacements are unable to substitute what has previously been the tool for creation of real values within the being of man and woman. There is a difference between shallow ideas only residing in the head and between actual understanding deepened into one’s being in an irreversible way.

     –     There is practically no way the secular could match the spirit.

The most important or essential point in the field of psychology is the distinction between the soul and the spirit. Or, - you might say, between the corresponding parts of the mind. The contemporary “science” referred to attempting to deal with the issue of the mind and its processes generally denying the existence of the soul and the spirit has not, - as it seems, - the slightest notion of the necessary observation related to. – Of course true understanding of the issues and matters involved would include it even if the occult phenomena is denied or overlooked. There is a difference between the mental processes (of the persons intending to investigate the matter) in case they are just intellectual and off actual close relation to the reality in question and in case they are of real observation arising from actual capabilities (some of course may have and others not) inherent in one’s being which the intellectual would fail to observe.

2.6.2019 – The way psychiatry would be viewed in the future, - contemporary psychiatry in a sufficiently distant future, - will be quite similar to the way we view quacks belonging to primitive cultures today. – The great abundance of professional terms only familiar to those engaged with the issue, plus the situation in which intellectual ideas are accepted by students of the field without sufficient criticism based on one’s own reasonable judgment, - lead to the possibility of the great ridiculousness in which the study of this subject today is held and conducted.

9.6.2019 – At a place where “the show must go on” the truth is never guarantied.

     –     19.4.2020 – A person who is truly awake ought to be able to maintain consistent thought in his dreams as well.

23.5.2020 – Until you are there whatever you say is not it and when you are there is no need to say anything.

24.5.2020 – If some “God” creates a world where the beings created are in constant need of “grace” this speaks very poorly of this creator.

The view of grace is forever incomplete.

The name of Jesus, in the original Hebrew, - “Yeshua”, - is rooted in the idea of salvation. The idea of salvation is rooted in self pity. I don’t know to what extent this might correlate with what has been known as the first of the “four noble truths” presented by Gautama Buddha in his first public talk.

Before you ask what is the nature of thought you need to ask what is the nature of knowledge. Before you ask what is the nature of knowledge you need to ask what is the nature of mind. – There are the words of Tendō Nyojō – (Tiantong Rujing) “a bottle gourd vine entwines with a bottle gourd”, - there seems to be apparently something interacting with itself, - but the existence of a self consciousness or the separation into an idealistic part and an acting part or the inner separation into input, processing and output are superfluous and in a way unreal, - while still this something is capable of learning – that is extending its capabilities – whatever they are.

2.6.2020 – It seems it could be said people in the west generally don’t know what sincerity is.

? – (2020) Seeking happiness is true contamination. It is untruthfulness manifested.

20.8.2020 – the thought has crossed my mind of how could nonexistence be or take place? I mean if there is a single thought, any mental factor, anything, - anything being in any way aware of this nonexistence, - than it does exist – obviously. The thing is the reality is so refined there is no difference between existence and nonexistence. – Ultimately refined, free of any artificial or superfluous addition or extra complexity forming as if an extra layer surrounding the original thing.

23.9.2020 – People say man – the human being, - is the lord of creation. Many are stupid enough to believe that, though it is still in a way true, - even a small flea is the lord of creation. But this human being, - whom educated fools believe to be as I just said, - votes for Donald Trump. (And it doesn’t matter that much for this issue who wins the elections, - anyway and either way we know there would be about 50% who vote for him, that’s like about 50% drinking salted sea water instead of drinking water, - it tells you what humanity’s like) Those intellectual fools (who are able to see how bad Trump is, which is of course no great thing) would make all possible excuses as to avoid seeing the truth, - this is another facet of the miserability of this said lord, but still not all are fools, otherwise who could see their foolishness?

26.9.2020 – The delusion people delude themselves that psychiatrists and psychologists actually have true understanding of the field they engage in can be quite troublesome. In the future, quite clearly, - when true understanding of the relevant matters will become acquired by humanity as a whole, - these “professionals” will be viewed very similarly to quacks claiming various abilities in primitive tribes in Africa.

     –     – Those accomplished in the spirit, to some extent, - are often able to see the ridiculousness in these claimed “scientific” paths. – Obviously, - gaining some experience over a considerable number of years – statistically – some knowledge can be got, - but the tools may be compared to those of a carpenter while attempting to deal with electric or gasoline powered engines. – Also the belief all human functions are merely an outcome of physical processes in the physical body is no doubt hazardous and as rough as the work of a butcher cutting meat in his shop.

3.10.2020 – Contemporary science, to a certain extent, - is blocking the advance of humanity rather than contributing to it. That is not to say discoveries are necessarily untrue, - though some views may be ridiculously wrong, - but that the focus may be subsequently turned all the wrong way, - while views that are not commonly materialistic may or would be considered (and it is practically very much so) not even worthy of examination. (I mean the response to relating to such an issue would be “wtf are you talking about” and the attitude would be it is not worthy of serious discussion in the first place)

On Jan 31st 2019 there was a fourth issue not here, either I deleted it or did not write, - and I don’t remember what it was.
The Quote on February 2nd 2019 was added recently after originally I just left the quotation marks empty, (and forgot about it) and the reference from May 11 of the same year was somewhat corrected due to a mistake in English.
Where marked “?” I wrote it on paper (I think June 2020) and later did not remember the exact date on which I did.

Two Kinds of People

There are many ways of dividing people according to various ideas or characteristics into two or more kinds or groups and I am quite sure anyone interested in the field of spirit has generally heard or came across such things once or more than once sometime.

This here is one I have thought of sometime and have written about it to Nissim Amon by e-mail on May 9th 2016. - Now I thought it is appropriate to post here, at the blog. Now is October 20 2017, I am writing it on a “Word” file, and will add it to my currently stagnant blog when I get the chance.

The idea is simple: - Some people use words in one way, and some use them in another way, - regarding a certain point or issue: - I am not relating to everyday speech. - I am referring to when we need or choose to use more eloquent or elevated language. (In Hebrew we have a word “רהוט” or “רהוטה” but in English it doesn’t seem there is a word exactly matching it)

- In such occasions the difference I am referring to and writing about here exists: - Some people use the language and words in order to fit their need or aim: - In case such language is necessary for the expression of their ideas or message or structure-or-content-they-wish-to-display they would use it accordingly. That is to say when other more common everyday means of communication would practically not serve the aim in an appropriate manner.

This may be obvious but is not necessarily so. - The other kind consists of those who would rather use such language not in the same manner but in order to create a certain impression.

It is not a matter of sincerity. It is not that it does not reflect sincerity clearly and doubtlessly, - but it is not the issue I am intending for here. It is not the main point intended to be pointed at here, however sincerity in itself may be as important and as valuable as it may be. - It is a matter of a person’s capabilities. - Some just use the more serious-sounding language or the more apparently-impressive phrases and sentences in order to sound as they wish and appear to be what they most likely are not. It is true there are occasions which call - though never completely I suppose, - for a certain spirit and means or manner of communication, - but this is not generally what I am referring to and even there things would still be - somewhat at least, - according to what I am saying here. - But generally, - There are those who lack the true feeling or sensation for the language, - who are without the relevant sensitivity as to properly phrase themselves as to express rather refined or truly elevated notions or proposals or ideas - who might sound rather the same to many (otherwise this whole post would have been unnecessary or out of place) in speaking in different occasions or incidents, (and off dignified stages, no doubt) but are essentially different and are fundamentally pretentious even if unaware of it themselves.

Such is the idea I wanted to express here. I believe it of some value if it enables some to trace and/or to detect the true abilities of some intellectuals who may in general somewhat deceive many - even if quite innocently and unintentionally, - as to miss or fail to notice their real shallowness of mind and inability of observing reality as it is in sufficient depth as to come to satisfying conclusions which might lead us where we would aspire to go.

Nice language, isn’t it?

Wtf.

Get my point now?

Some serve the need, - and some imitate, ignorant of the true spirit, unaware this is what they are doing since they mistake empty intellectuality and mere external appearance for true understanding which might sometimes manifest itself in such capable means of expression and sometimes might not need to.

Fools, as a general rule, don’t know they are fools.

This is sometimes not a secret, but sometimes it is.

So far.

Nishijima

While writing the last two posts, - as ridiculous as it may apparently be, - I did not yet know that Nishijima is no longer with us.

On the 1st of October I asked Nissim Amon [by e-mail, - that is] whether he knows where could he be found. - Then I learned that Gudo Wafu Nishijima Roshi is no longer residing on the physical plane.

Having checked Brad’s blog I came across this, which mentions the date January 28. I haven’t been reading Brad’s blog for a few years recently.

I recall at the time I was in the Dojo, Nishijima said sometime “If I die I just die”.

This has to do with something that was on Tricycle just at the time. Still he said that. I am quite sure someone there - then - was puzzled about something a “Zen” master said according to that article. I won’t get into it. This not what made me write this post.

I’ll bring some of what Brad said first. I didn’t originally intend to but he talks about what I was going to write about anyway. So here it is. It is not essential, - I’ll write quite the same I would otherwise, - but since he already did relate to the matter it seems more appropriate and also more serious that I do: -

I talked to him about death on a number of occasions. Many people who have read my stuff are already familiar with the fact that he very strongly denied that the theory of reincarnation had any legitimate place in Buddhism. But I also know that his view of what happened after a person died was more nuanced than one might expect from knowing only that he denied reincarnation (as well as rebirth, transmigration, etc., it didn’t matter what you called it!).

Once we were talking about something I do not recall. We were in the room he stayed in during retreats at Tokei-in temple, just the two of us. He started to say “When I die,” but stopped himself before saying the word “die.” Instead, he paused and said, “When I… move on to another realm.” I thought that was fascinating. I’d never heard him describe death that way before and I never heard him say anything like that again.

...”.

- He relates to the subject in the two next paragraphs too, somewhat. But for here there is no need for the further quote. That which appears in small characters is not smaller originally.

Nishijima is known for denying the occult. He generally denied the existence of anything outside the physical plane. By “known” I don’t mean famous, - those who know him usually know that.

His successors, as far as I know, follow this line. Though there may be more of them I don’t know than those I do.

At the time I was in the Dojo, which means ’96, - Nishijima was not particularly looking for discussing these matters. Quite obviously - he did not want to lie and he did not want to affirm their existence on the other hand. He obviously too did not want to make his reluctance concerning this evident to many.

So when he was asked he would answer but he himself did not raise the subject.

Nishijima knew (and knows) the occult exists perfectly well. And so does Brad.

Nishijima knew that far better than all sorts of chatters who might talk about it endlessly, not knowing much about it for real. - He did not want himself, or his Dojo or Sangha or teaching-in-general, - or Buddhism-itself in general - to gain an image of being strange or eccentric. - Normality was in a way - you might perhaps say, - quite a central point in the spirit of his teaching. When I say “in the spirit” I mean it was something he did not necessarily relate to explicitly.
- But further than that he did not want the path itself, - in all ways mentioned just above, - to be hindered by such an image.

And there is another point: - Paying attention to the related issues and matters would not be what he would consider beneficial for the practice of his disciples and those who follow him (or might follow him) in general.
- Ramana Maharshi, - whom I mentioned earlier on the #9 post on this blog, - would not deny the existence of the out-of-the-physical elements or phenomena, but would still ask why do people prefer to find interest in them rather than in what I-might-call the true aim of the path.

- Nishijima preferred to lie. - Beside what has been said so far referring to the occult might have caused potential practitioners to keep away or flee off the way of what we refer to as the Dharma, or the spirit - the way is one whatever you call it - either way.

I’d say it would generally be wrong to just pick up his way without applying concrete consideration to the situation or particular state one is in. - He was not violating “right speech”, - but his attitude, - given that you accept what I’m saying here, - was definitely not the standard as for it.
- One who understands the matter I am generally relating to here will inevitably know that humanity will unavoidably recover from its present view as for the true form of the universe and its construction. Nishijima acted under certain conditions which gradually change as time progresses. - Plus: - in Japan.
- The Japanese are not always that adherent to the truth as it is in there manner of life.

- So what was right for him would not necessarily be right for his successors living in a different society or a different situation.

I do not criticize Nishijima, I do not even assume he was wrong, I do trust his judgment regarding this was better than mine, but I do not even - on the other hand, - doubt the rightness of the revealance I have made here.

Still - the question I would - as I had earlier thought - put to those particularly wise humans who apparently deny the existence of all-but-the-physical-plain as part of what is supposed to be spiritual (- that is to say, - or “Dharma”, - which is quite the same here) teaching or guidance, - is - how would they view the first lane of the eightfold-path?

- That is to say, - how could they consider - that by hindering a person’s structure and system of views in a way that would inevitably be misleading for him as for his understanding of his surroundings and familiarity with it, - they would still be practically performing an act of that which they are supposed to carry out within the duty they chose? - What [tf] do they think “right views” is?

I believe this point is generally not considered.

- Another matter: -
As for those who actually believe in all standard secular materialistic views, - and as for those who pretend to too: -
- And I mean (- of course) particularly among those who have chosen the path as instructed by Master Dogen and others within the school or the stream today generally known as “Zen”, running through Bodhidharma and his successors within that house: -

Master Dogen - how would they view him?

- Was he a fool who believed in all he referred to in the Shobogenzo (and generally) due to a primitive and undeveloped state corresponding appropriately to the time he lived in? Was his mental ability due-to-which-we-follow-his-tracks irrelevant to the depth-of-mind and ability-of-realistic-thinking necessary for the discerning of the actual facts with regard to which determining has to be made?

- I am not relating here to any matter of respect or esteem you might have or not have toward our beloved Eihei Dogen Zenji. - Disregard that. - That would be completely bending or ruining my point. - My intention refers to your common sense, - to its consistency of view. Intellectuals would say they only adopt the philosophical structure presented, which is true in itself, but does not answer the question. Master Dogen was a real person, not a fictional figure a writer made up, and not a computer software written somewhat-randomly-perhaps according to what the programmers might have in mind. - The question is whether it would have been possible for him to be such a man of inferior quality, and it is not him alone - of course. - And not “Zen” masters only - too, - it would be most great figures of humanity until sometime - I guess - during the 18th century. Such figures were men (or women) of faith - both in East and west.

I won’t name, anyone can easily do that. I might relate to that some other time. My focus here is on master Dogen. Though the point would of course not be that considerably different. - Could he have been so severely mistaken as for his world view? - The truth is people to-a great-extent absorb their view off their surroundings, rather than rationally construct them as they quite obviously imagine they do. So both today and in older times everyone generally think the same. I won’t generally relate to that, [here] but the reason I am mentioning this is this is the reason why (in my view) many think it reasonable that a person of the stature of Dogen would still hold reasonlessly the same ideas held mistakenly within the general society during his time. Of course I don’t mean they analyze things and come to the conclusion consciously as presented here. - I’d assume this is the situation. Thus the great deal of humanity is able to believe or assume its evident highlights are simultaneously a bunch of idiots. As for Master Dogen you might try and consider yourselves - it depend on one’s depth of mind and thoroughness of attitude, among other things, - clarity mainly - never on intelligence alone which may be a misleading tool in the hands of the unable.

This was meant to be a short post. - However, - then I came across what Brad said, and also while writing there seemed to be points I had to relate to, - unexpectedly - somewhat at least. - That which brought me to the writing of this is the following. - The story I will bring here. This is what made me dedicate a post to Nishijima’s entering Nirvana - otherwise I would have not come to that.

No disrespect to Nishijima - of course, - just a matter of having nothing to say. Readers arriving at this blog would usually - I assume - know Nishijima and have read about his death elsewhere by now. So here is the main point and the ground or foundation of this post:

At the time I was at the Dojo, (Nishijima’s Ida Ryogokudo Zazen Dojo in Ichikawa, which no longer exists) ’96, - as I said earlier, - Nishijima would spend the weekends with us at the Dojo and midweeks with his family in Osaka, where he would also work. The weekends would not have been equal in length, - he might sometimes arrive on Thursday - evening or afternoon, - or sometimes on Friday. - He might leave on Sunday or he might leave on Monday morning.

One day I was talking with him in his room at the Dojo. As you will understand it inevitably had to be Monday. Though I don’t remember the day otherwise. He had to go out, since it was morning it had to be Monday, - he was leaving at the end of the weekend, as I wanted to continue the conversation I went out with him. We were talking about Buddhism, or somewhere in the vicinity, - I don’t remember exactly, - but it was generally about his teaching - I don’t remember at all where exactly was the conversation in particular at this point - but it was generally about matters of the spirit (though Nishijima naturally wouldn’t call it this in my place here) or the path. The train station - JR, - I don’t remember its name - was a few minutes from the Dojo as far as I am able to remember. I was wearing a samugi, which people in the Dojo didn’t usually, - but I had two and I’d were them sometimes. - I’m saying that because I did not have time to change, - obviously, - before going out, and I got the impression some people on the street found it a bit amusing that I was wearing it, - but it has really no importance in itself or anything to do with what I have to say here.

The station is underground. There is a stairway down and then, shortly after, there is the entrance where you can’t get in unless you get a platform ticket, - or an ordinary train ticket - of course.
We were still talking, - all the way, and after we got down the stairs we stoped about a meter or two before the gate were I can’t get in, - as I had no intention of getting a platform ticket which does cost a small sum.

- Just on our right was a massive concrete pillar, - about 40 centimeters wide in each way - (that is to say about 40 cm wide by about 40 cm deep, - square roughly) supporting the ceiling above us at the ground level.

There were some papers attached to it, I recall folding one of them in order to demonstrate the way I saw self consciousness - “divided mind” as it is known in the field of “Zen”.

At that time we were already talking about the phenomena exceeding the physical plain - beings or whatever may reside in other worlds, - never in such detail but in general reference to what would generally be called “the occult”, as the term I used in the beginning.

I can’t remember what I said but Nishijima - apparently - tried to deny the idea as he usually would - implicitly I suppose and not actually explicitly - imagining - it seems - that I might accept such an attitude.
And here we come to the actual point: - I tapped on the pillar with my hand and said “These things are just as real as this”. Nishijima was not at all resenting. - On the contrary, - he was very happy. He made no attempt of hiding that.

At that he said “So, you can talk to me any time”, - and then he added - “when I have time” - since he knew I might run sometimes at the vicinity of the rough borders of being a neg.

This is the point. He was very happy to find out I could not be misled in that way and that I actually knew what-I-expressed and had solid confidence in this matter which could not be shaken so easily in that silly manner as he knowingly attempted.

Nishijima never tried or had any attempt, - of course - to mislead or fool anyone who did know the truth about these matters. Even when denying what he did he did not intend for anyone who knows to take him seriously. I heard him speak these denials more than once.

I am not getting back to repeat what I said at the beginning. But this is clearly the situation.

And just a remark - as for the way I expressed myself: - I do not remember off where I recall that - but it is said that for those who are able to perceive the higher plains, - they are more real than our physical world with which most of us are familiar. That is to relate to the question likely put by many materialists, - how could one tell it is real and not imagination?

So far for that. The solidity and somewhat significant presence of the concrete pillar did make their contribution, I suppose.

The reason I put Nishijima’s picture above, which I cut off the video Brad put on his post, (clicking on the picture takes you there too) is that there you can see how amused he is off what he himself is saying there. It may evidently be - supposedly - that this is just due to the fact that it might have been amusing anyway. - But this is just why he is making no attempt to hide it. Since he expects the incapable will so assume. You can try and watch it and see for yourselves. It does tell, as far as I remember. (- Off watching it over a month ago, about the time I started writing this post)

I liked the picture Brad put on his post, - so I’m putting it here too.

Three Times “No”

On the occasion of Kalo’s death, I wanted to relate to a certain story I heard of Kyudo Nakagawa Roshi, who also lived and taught in Israel, from 1970 to 1984.

Kyudo Roshi is a “Zen” master from Ryutaku-ji, - Rinzai sect; - also mentioned here at the blog earlier.

He was my first teacher, he lived and taught on the Mount of Olives, as I understood, - I only arrived after he left for NY.
          I started sitting on ’85.

I heard the story from another member of his Sangha, - after that Sangha no longer existed actually - I think it was on in ’95. (- it could be either ’95 or ’96)

It is about how Roshi came to come to Israel.

One day, his master, Nakagawa Soen Roshi, (no family connection) came to him, at the monastery, - as it must have been, - and asked - [“Do you”]want to go to Israel?”
          - “No”, - was the answer.
A month later, again, Soen Roshi asked Kyudo Roshi the same question: - “Want to go to Israel?”. - Again, - “No” was the answer.

Then, another month later, - a third time - Soen Roshi again asked our teacher this very same question - “Want to go to Israel?”. - Kyudo Roshi, - this time, - replied - “Yes”.

Consequently, he came to Israel, and taught as I said, - until 1984, when he moved to New York (I think instructed by the Rinzai head council, or something of the sort) and established “Soho Zendo” there.
However, - one day, when he was still teaching in Israel, - he told his Sangha this story. - Btw, - the Sangha was called “Dead Sea Sangha”. - As far as I understand the Dead Sea could be seen from up the Mount of Olives.
Then they asked, - why did you reply two times “no” and the third time “yes”?
Roshi replied - “Three times ‘no’ is a fix mind”.

I might refer sometime further to that, - perhaps, - but this is the story as I heard it.

Kyudo Roshi entered Nirvana in 2007. - 29th of December 2007.
I only heard of it much later.

It seemed right to post this now, as it might tell something about Shlomo Kalo too, who started teaching about the same time, (I might assume) and continued in Jaffa until the day of the date heading the last post.

30.8.14 - Kalo Died

Shlomo Kalo, whom I mentioned in earlier posts, died on Saturday.

This is just s few links, for whoever is interested. (I only found one in English, of what I thought worthy of listing; - and this too is only on updating this post (Sep 4th))

My “Time” post is still to be put on some day. - It is not an easy one and I am currently not working on it at all. The circumstances are not enabling and I apparently must just wait.
